Gavin Mayhew Art Tuition

Information on the tuition that Gavin Mayhew does for aspiring artists to follow.

Meanwhile here are a few 'ARTIPS'.........

New Tip:-If you use water based paints such as water colours, gouache or acrylics then instead of choosing the usual one pot water vessel, why not use a plastic cheese dip container that you can buy from your local store. After you have eaten the yummy contents, clean it out then fill each tub (there are usually three to four sections) with water. When cleaning your brush start off in one section, move onto the next and so on. The last tub should always stay clean which means you won't have to constantly keep changing your dirty water.

TIP: If you can't get the top off your tube of paint, just heat up the top with either hot water; hairdryer or similar - but not a bunson burner or an acetyaline torch as you may spontanously combust.

TIP: To stop acrylic and oil paints from drying out (if used from a pallette), a great tip is to put the pallette in the freezer. When you need to use your paints again just thaw them out and paint away.

TIP: Don't leave brushes standing in water or thinners. It's great if you want to paint around corners!!!! Lay them flat or have them suspended in the liquid.

New art classes to start on Wed. September 24th at St Thomas Church Hall (small hall), Stanhope (opposite Barclays Bank).

Afternoon sessions 1.15pm - 3.15pm

Evening sessions 6.30pm - 8.30pm

The new venue is great, as it is warm and light with an excellent view through the very large window. I will be concentrating on different techniques for the 3 p's (painting, pencil and pastels). I hope to have some trips to art exhibits. Students input for venues are welcome.

After two successful portrait classes there will be more in the new term

Tip for working from a photograph....make sure that it is a good photograph with an interesting or unusual light i.e. a side light, back light, below light. This will create a feeling of form. Try not to use a photo taken with a flash as it tends to flatten the subject which will result in a flat portrait.

Keep your eyes peeled for further info.

I also run regular life classes at Stanhope Dales Centre. Information on the next class to follow.
